President Sung-Chul Shin is an accomplished physicist, innovative leader in higher education, and policymaker in science and technology in Korea. Working at KAIST from 1989, he served in key administrative positions including vice president, while playing a pioneering role in the research of nanospinics. As Founding President, he led the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) for six years from 2011.
He has also been deeply involved in developing Korea’s national strategy and policymaking for science and technology as the vice chair of the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology from 2013 to 2016.
A graduate of applied physics of Seoul National University, President Shin earned his MS at KAIST in 1977 and Ph.D. at Northwestern University in 1984.
